Jiayan Sun

Jiayan Sun was the first prize winner of CCC Toronto International Piano Competition 2010, presented by the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto. The final round of the competition took place at the Royal Conservatory's Koerner Hall where the 20-year-old pianist won with the Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor by Prokofiev.

Mr. Sun was born in Yantai, Shandong, China in 1990. He began to study piano at the age of six and won the first prize in the First International Seiler Piano Competition for young pianists in Greece in May 2004. He also won the nomination prize given by the Argentine pianist Alberto Portugheis and the performing prizes of Chopin's Fantasia in F minor and Chopin's Etude No.5 at the same time. In September in the same year he took the fifth prize in the Fourth Moscow International Frederick Chopin Competition for young pianists. In November 2004, he was awarded the thirteenth Chengxian Fu memorial scholarship of the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing.

In 2007, Mr. Sun won the Nordmann Scholarship Piano Competition in The Juilliard School and in May 2008, he was graduated with the achievement award from The Juilliard School Pre-college Division. In November in the following year, he organized a concert and performed in tribute to the great German conductor, Wilhelm Furtwangler, in the Juilliard School. Mr. Sun is currently studying piano under the tutelage of Dr. Yoheved Kaplinsky at The Juilliard School with full scholarships.

Mr. Sun has performed in the world renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York. He has also participated in the ChamberFest and the performances of Chopin's 24 Etudes. He made frequent stage performances in New York, Beijing, Taipei, among others, in collaboration with Chinese National Symphony Orchestra, Chinese Youth Symphony Orchestra, Shandong Symphony Orchestra, Qingdao Symphony Orchestra, etc. His performances had also been broadcasted on the China Central Television (CCTV).

North East Jazz - Agincourt Collegiate Institute

North East Jazz is the senior jazz ensemble at Agincourt Collegiate Institute, the oldest high school in the former city of Scarborough. Comprised of students in grade 12, it is one of four jazz ensembles at the school. The band performs at several community functions throughout the year as well as at many school functions. NEJ has also toured to Disney World, Chicago, New York, Ottawa and Montreal and has performed at Massey Hall as part of the Toronto District School Board's Sounds of Toronto Showcase Concert. North East Jazz competes annually at MusicFest Canada, and has received Gold Awards at he Regional and National festivals. Last year, North East Jazz performed at the TD Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival, as part of the inaugural high school showcase.

The Director and Conductor, David Lum, is the Curriculum Leader of Music at Agincourt Collegiate Institute. Ensembles under his direction have won critical acclaim and performed at Roy Thompson Hall, Massey Hall and the Toronto Centre for the Arts. He is the instructor for the Tuba/Euphonium studio at York University and is a sessional instructor for the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, teaching in the Summer Additional Qualifications course in Music.

Mr. Lum is the Chair of the Awards and Scholarships Committee for the Ontario Music Educators' Association. Since 2008, David has held the post of Conductor of the Northern Ontario Music Festival Honour Band. In 2009, David received an Honourary Lifetime Membership from the Ontario Band Association. In May of the same year, he was awarded the Keith Mann Outstanding Band Director Award at MusicFest Canada's "The Nationals".

The school has been founded over 10 years in Ontario. Under persistent and vigorous training, students can experience and appreciate the beauty and gracefulness of dance. The elegance and physique of dance encourages students to understand and appreciate more Chinese culture. Students He, Wan Wei, Dai, Jin Jin, Vicky Luo, Cecilia Hui and others have achieved first place in the North America Chinese Dance Completion in Vancouver and Kiwanis Dance Completion in Ontario under the solos and group dance categories. The school involves actively in many major community cultural events such as the Chinese and Canadian National Day celebrations, Sichuan earthquake relief fundraising performance, return of Hong Kong to China celebration, Chinese New Year galas, TV's Mandarin Profile Awards Presentation, Mid-Autumn Festival celebration, International Kite Fest, Hua Xia Festival and many more. We will continue to do what is believed to be good for Chinese culture and dance.

Nicky Gengxian Lin

Nicky Lin is an up-and-coming multi-talented artist from China. He studied arts in Jiangxi and was granted top prize in 1996. Since then Nicky has begun his show business in singing, TV drama series, musicals, advertising, etc. He has performed in many major provincial and national Chinese New Year variety shows, National Day celebrations, fundraisers and cultural events. Besides, he has taken part in cultural exchange programs in South East Asia. Over the years, Nicky has got numerous awards and commendations. Awards include the most promising artist and top singer, etc.
